Snaps + Rye

Opened in 2014, Kell and Jacqueline Skött’s café has everything of a small Copenhagen in the heart of Notting Hill. Before a stroll along Portobello Road Market, it’s the life-saving cocoon with such a cosy Danish decor one would almost feel at home wrapped up in furs, warming out hands around a fennel-liquorice tea.

Tania Steylter’s seasonal menu twists Scandinavian classics, alongside sea produce from The Severn + Wye Smokery (no Little Mermaid though). Some of the safe bets large enough to send you off on a North Sea venture: so creamy traditional or veggie kedgeree, polar yoghurt with granola and stewed red fruits… Hungry like a Viking? Treat yourself to the famous “Full Danish breakfast” (bacon-spinach-sausages) with a spicy Bloody Viking cocktail. Then leave the ship with a soft apricot-almond pastry to go, still wondering how the Danish combine so well produce freshness and atmosphere warmth. Ahoy!
